## NUMBER SYSTEM

When we type some words or letters, the computer translates them into numbers as the computer can understand only numbers. A computer can understand positional number system where there are only a few symbols called digits and these symbols represent different values depending on the position they occupy in the number.The value of each digit depends on

1. The digit itself.

2. The position the digit occupies in the number.

3. The base of the number system used.

There are four types of the number system

**DECIMAL NUMBER SYSTEM**

The decimal number system is familiar to homo sapiens from the early stage of civilization. The decimal number system is also known as base 10 system because this system uses 10 different symbols, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. The base 10 system is also said to have a radix of 10.

Number in use= 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Base= 10

**BINARY NUMBER SYSTEM**

The binary number system uses two symbols, 0 and 1 and its radix or base is 2.

Base=2

**OCTAL NUMBER SYSTEM**

The octal number system is one of the popular number systems because of its simplicity in conversion into the binary equivalent.For octal number system, the radix or base is 8 and the digits in this system are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

Number in use= 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

Number in use= 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

Base=8

**HEXADECIMAL NUMBER SYSTEM**

In hexadecimal number system, sixteen numbers, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F are counted.Its radix or base is 16.
